How we Classify our Tours

All of our walking tours in France can be customised to requirements. That said, in order to help you decide which tour is best for you, we have devised a four-way classification sysyem into which each tour fits. The name of each tour indicates the type of experience on offer, its location and the transportation included.

The four holiday types are as follows:

  1. Hiking: morning walks of around 4 hours per day, on circular routes in coastal or countryside milieus. These are our drive-hike programmes, which require a car to get around from one day's walking to the next - your own car or a hire car.

  2. The remaining holiday types comprise all-inclusive transport - normally a mix of transfers (including luggage as required) and short train journeys.

  3. Rambling: walking for around 4 hours per day, on circular routes set in urban milieus.
  4. Trekking: straight-line, inn-to-inn walks, mostly along major walking trails. Trekking fills the best part of the day and you change accommodation every night.
  5. Walking: comprises a mixture of circular and straight-line trails. You do not change accommodation every night and walks last the best part of the day.

So you can search and select your preferred tour using three criteria:
    a) The tour 'types' as above.
    b) The letters that you find in paranthesis adjacent to each tour in the left-hand margin on the home page. These indicate the degree of physical challenge posed by our tours:

    • Light (L),
    • Moderate (M),
    • Moderately Challenging (MC) and
    • Challenging (C)
    c) The regions where they take place:
    1. Camargue
    2. Cevennes
    3. Languedoc
    4. Provence
    5. Southern France
